Dr. Smith Parent Letter Addressing School Safety
    July 30, 2018

    Dear Lawrence Township families,

Our district is devastated by the events that have taken place in our state and country related to school violence. These events have made students, parents, and the community at-large feel a sense of unease, concern, and fear.  As both an educator and a parent, violent events like these are my worst nightmares, negatively affecting our entire community.

Please know that the MSD of Lawrence Township is committed daily to ensuring that students are safe when they come into our buildings.  The district is constantly monitoring and reviewing practices and procedures to strengthen safety plans. As a result, we have determined that it is in our best interest to conduct random weapons searches at our secondary schools beginning this school year. It is imperative that parents emphasize the importance of safety. Our Elementary schools will see an increase in patrols from the Lawrence Police and Indianapolis Police Department Northeast District.  Student and staff safety is paramount, and this additional layer of protection will be one more proactive step in ensuring the safety of all who enter.

Another change this school year is the implementation of the Safe Visitors Solution System in all buildings. This safety process will allow schools to check an individual’s background prior to allowing him/her into the building with students. There will be up to three layers of checks depending on if the individual is a visitor, volunteer, vendor, or contractor.

If you have additional safety questions, please do not hesitate to contact your student’s building principal directly. We appreciate your partnership and support.

    Sincerely,

    Dr. Shawn A. Smith, Ph.D.
    Superintendent of Schools
